U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.77%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.77%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.48%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 0.19% or 0.34 points to trade at 180.72 at the close. Meanwhile, Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 0.01% or 0.02 points to end at 144.00 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was down 0.10% or 0.04 points to 39.92 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), which fell 2.04% or 2.86 points to trade at 137.07 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 1.73% or 7.58 points to end at 430.53 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) was down 1.40% or 3.19 points to 223.86.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lamb Weston Holdings Inc (NYSE:LW) which rose 2.63% to 67.00, APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which was up 1.14% to settle at 22.09 and Hershey Co (NYSE:HSY) which gained 0.97% to close at 171.83.

The worst performers were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which was down 5.22% to 31.98 in late trade, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which lost 4.95% to settle at 431.66 and Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:PLTR) which was down 3.69% to 79.11 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Intrusion Inc (NASDAQ:INTZ) which rose 381.56% to 2.17, iLearningEngines Inc (NASDAQ:AILE) which was up 266.05% to settle at 0.59 and Graphjet Technology (NASDAQ:GTI) which gained 198.38% to close at 1.01.

The worst performers were Viracta Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VIRX) which was down 32.49% to 0.16 in late trade, reAlpha Tech Corp (NASDAQ:AIRE) which lost 29.05% to settle at 2.54 and Painreform Ltd (NASDAQ:PRFX) which was down 28.57% to 3.50 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2262 to 547 and 65 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2383 fell and 915 advanced, while 109 ended unchanged.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.28% to 15.95.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.80% or 21.36 to $2,632.54 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.95% or 0.66 to hit $70.28 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.85% or 0.62 to trade at $73.47 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.02% to 1.04, while USD/JPY fell 0.06% to 157.91.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 107.82.
